CARL HIAASEN'S 'LUCKY YOU' |
![]() Bode Escapes Derek Millman as Bodean Gazzer in 2006 Key West premiere of CARL HIAASEN’S LUCKY YOU by Francis Matthews and Denis Calandra. | 'Lucky You' tells the story of an African American woman by the name of JoLayne Lucks who wins the Florida lottery. She is a veterinarian who lives in a fictional central Florida town which is known for its 'pilgrim industry' of weeping madonnas, apostolic cooters, road stain Jesuses, etc. The winning numbers have also been chosen by two sinister clowns from south Florida, Chub and Bode, who form a militia and are convinced that there is a NATO commie force amassing in the Bahamas to join with the US government to strip the white man of his birthright. The fact that JoLayne is 'stealing' half of their lottery money only convinces them of the conspiracy. They beat her and steal her ticket. The mad farcical plot has Jo Layne joining up with a reporter named Tom Krome to pursue the bad guys and reclaim her winning ticket. After high adventure and much in the way of loony doings by assorted other Florida eccentrics, JoLayne and Tom recover the ticket and she purchases a tract of land to prevent it from being turned into a mall. Music, clowning, serious ideas: a good time. |
